Time To Clear The Clutter... Rather Re-Arrange

Today, I had some time off and was home alone.
Just felt like I needed to do some cleaning and getting rid of so much clutter!
Along one wall, we are blessed with wonderful bookshelves.
Do you know what happens when you have such a luxury and are a hunter/junker/collector?
You keep tucking and arranging until finally you don't even know what's up there.
That's how I spent my afternoon... and boy was I going to toss some stuff out.

I started by pulling off a lot of the old books we've collected over the years.
Had totally forgotten about these.

And this.

A book of Irish toasts. How fun!

Surprised? I know. My family and it's odd ball personality. When the boys were little, we
thought it would be fun to search out the tackiest souvenir on every vacation that we took.
You will find toe nail clippers from London, salt and pepper shakers from the Dells, a photo of us posing with wooden soccer players in Barcelona and plenty more.

I'm not the only collector in my house... John can't help himself.
The above are some of his items. See the boxer? He's actually a salt shaker.
The pepper must have been the one throwing the punch.

San Antonio. It's an old dance hall that has live bands and they play country and western music.
You'll find couples, families with young kids and single scouting the place for a good
two stepping partner.

I'm telling you that everything you see here was in those shelves. I see this everyday,
but really looked at it again.

John and I picked up these salt and pepper shakers... I bet 20 years ago in St. Charles.
They still charm me.

John collects unique ash trays.
Where do we put all this stuff?

One of my early flea marketing finds. Bought if for my husband at Kane County.

When we first moved into this house, we had a water line run to a building out back.
The boys and I had a great time being archeologists. We dug up bits and pieces of old
china. Notice the doll's ear.

Man zone. Liquor and drawers.
Opposite these drawers are John's hunting guns.
Tightly locked away.
Wanna cringe with me? When our youngest was in middle school, the teacher asked the
students where would be a safe place in case of an emergency...
One of the students piped up "The McMahons! They've got plenty of weapons and liquor!".
I still break out in a sweat when I think of it.

Let's open a drawer.... inside the handkerchief is a collection of
acorns that John and Ben collected at the state park when Ben was only three years old.

I'm going to blame John for the rumors going around the school.

Not a great shot of the room, but you get the idea.
You know what? After four hours of opening, sifting, cleaning and re-arranging, I didn't toss a thing.

Flurries Inspire!

All of Door County woke up to snow flurries this morning!

At first I felt that tinge of despair at the bleakness of it all, but after a cup of

coffee I was loving the coziness of it all and remembering what a

different and wonderful this place is during the winter months.

This is when we have our small town community, shared with

only a sprinkling of tourists.

I thought I'd share some wonderful items for sale in the shop that

These mugs are hard to keep in stock.

Also, you can just see the corner of a very large ironstone platter.

I've never seen one like this... with a lovely raised pattern.

By the way, I have been informed that all of my followers and bars have just

been covered up. Over the next week, the blog will be getting a face lift and all will be

well.

I Don't Know Exactly What Happened!

Well, I decided it was time to update my blog and get a little face lift.
Followed the directions, I thought, to a tee.
Gone are all my side bars.
Gone are my followers.
I'm not going to cry.... yet.

Wind Storm 2010, Barn Down.

Last Tuesday, between two and four pm, our neighbor lost her barn.
40 to 60 mile an hour wind gust.
She's fine, barn isn't too close to the house.
Can't insure these old barns anymore, and every time the wind blows, it seems another goes down.
This one still has some collapsing to do.

Winter Wonderland, It's a Wrap!

First of all, the pumpkin snatchers hit Viva on Friday night.
Don't know if you've heard of them or seen their work, but in the wee hours of the night
these "snatchers" are known to roam the streets of Sister Bay, snatch pumpkins, carve them, and put them back.That should be a post on it's own.

Lucky me!

Thanks to all of you that graced our doors, and supported our little shop.
To have the opportunity to shut down for five days and put our creative powers to
the test is wild, dreamy, stressful and uncertain to say the least.
Last year when we uncovered the windows, the parking lot was jammed.
This year, there was only one car and my heart hit the floor.

But then ten minutes later, full and loaded with barely a space to move in!
I don't think I came out from behind the counter until 1:30, so if I missed you, I'm sorry I missed you!
I didn't get to take pictures until late in the afternoon, and the front room was left with
slim pickings, but you get the idea.

Two Days to Go! Wow, Is All I Can Say.

This is what the front of the shop looked like after we cleaned it out.
Needed a blank canvas for what's next.Yesterday was rough, today was a gem.
I have to admit, I've never transformed the shop like this.
When you come in, you won't believe it either.
This year is the third... as in the charm.
The themes are so distinctive and thought out.
Most of this is due to asking for display help.
I'm not going to say this is more important than what Carol, Dianne, Dan and John do,
it's just that I've never asked for display help before.
Katie Starr, from Small Town Vintage is an undiscovered jewel.
Some day she will be famous and won't have the time of day for me!

Also, just when I thought I couldn't go on, I realized that Carol's look is very retro,
and I handed over the diner room to her and Dianne.
Voila.

I left truly inspired.

The elves have arrived. No more dreaming and scheming, let's get to work people!
Oye. The first day is always the roughest. It's all about taking down and putting up the bones.
Not the most fun, but by the end of the day, I knew we'd pull it off.
First of all, Dianne above ironed like there was no tomorrow.

Katie, from Small Town Vintage dropped in today to help create for our Paris room.
Lots of talent in that girl, I'll tell ya!

Carol is what I'd call the "glue" of our Viva family. Organizer, tidier, ahead of the game, mind reader and overall heart and soul at Viva.

These handbags and totes arrived today.

Can you believe they are being stored in our back room, unavailable to the public?

That's because they are a part of our holiday show on Oct. 23rd, and these are just a portion of our New Year's Eve in Paris theme. What's really special about them is that they are made from reclaimed (or old) canvas. Weathered seams, patches and mends give them a great patina.

Didn't think these were for the holiday show, did ya?

You're in for lots of surprises!

We're celebrating Fall Fest this weekend, then on Monday shutting our doors until

Saturday for the big reveal!

One little side note to this post. If you read my blog, and come into my shop... please say hello!

So many times I'm helping other customers or parading around in our Heart's Desire clothing (looking quite cute, I might add).

When I'm in shop mode, you might think me unapproachable, but this is not the truth.

When someone tells me they read my blog, I almost come over and hug you.

One example... two adorable young women were in wanting to know where the good antique shopping was. I pointed out that our neighbors from Chelsea, just recieved a container from England. I told them about the antique malls, and could tell they weren't interested.

Then they mentioned they read this blog.... HELLO! I know where you want to go!

I love linen. Especially the washer, dryer, throw on kind.

I hope you can join us Saturday the 23rd, when we will have spent the previous five days with the doors closed, transforming the shop into a holiday feast for the eyes!
Can you imagine that last January I was at market buying for this show?
We have three distinct rooms this year, with new touches all around the shop.

This year you'll be greeted in the front with a cheerful and bright red and white theme.
Up the steps we're conjuring up the idea of New Year's Eve in Paris.

That's enough of a tease for now.

We're in the throws of Pumpkin Patch Weekend, so you know what that means... well, I'll leave you with a quote from a friend of mine that made me chuckle today:

"Pumpkin Patch in Egg Harbor this weekend. Fall Fest in Sister Bay next weekend. People are arriving by the bus-loads. Cars turning left, when signaling right. Goats on roof tops and Friday night fish. God help us all".

Keeping Shop... The Snake Story.

I've always considered myself lucky.

Lots of years ago, Val and I were sitting in the tiny cabin where we first opened shop.
A darling little log cabin surrounded by gardens and fields.
Blooming flowers and trees... lilacs, currants, peonies and when the temperature and the sun connect in just the right way, morels.

On a lovely summer day, we were having our lunch chit chatting about this and that.
(Keep in mind that location does mean everything, why we're no longer in that location, and why Val and I were both eating a leisurely lunch, not worried that someone would come in.)
For some reason, the conversation turned to things that scare us, or we might have a slight phobia about.
After the usual, spider/mouse/rubber band (oops that's another story)... snake issues were brought out, I thought it was time to share with Val the reason I am absolutely petrified of snakes.
Growing up in Texas and spending lots of summer time with cousins and relatives in the Arkansas country side, I think I am quite justified.
Some might call me a snake magnet.

I never see them coming, I'm always on top of them when it's too late, and my high stepping is top notch.

Here's a tiny sampling:

Seeing the tail of a rattler disappear under a sofa cushion ON the second floor.
The dead ones in jars that the boys insisted on sneaking into school and would find totally amusing to take out and whip at us at recess.
The rattlesnake on the front steps of my Grandmothers house that SHE chopped to bits and tossed aside
The copperhead I never saw, but was tossed like a feather by my Granddad to the front steps, my Grandmother screaming for me to run
The rattlesnake on the front steps of church as we go romping up those very steps.

Gag me with a spoon, I've got to stop now or I won't finish this story.

Let's move forward with the "lucky" part.

Val was very understanding of my fear, was almost calming in the way she explained why she was not afraid of them, and to always keep in mind that there are NO poisonous snakes in the entire state of Wisconsin (did you know that?) Right, so the worst thing that could happen would to be bitten, nothing else.

At that exact moment, I kid you not, a fat, four foot pine snake appeared on the floor slithering right in between the two of us.

In a split second I was in the parking lot with Val running for me squealing (or maybe that was me) until we were clinging to each other!
I screamed at her "I thought you weren't afraid of snakes!!!".
"Well I wasn't until I saw you flying over the counter for the front door and your screaming made it fly at me with it's fangs looking for my blood!".

"Stay calm! Think!".

"OMG, OMG, OMG... we're out here and it's in there!".

You know that moment when you are panicked, panting, and your heart rate is waaay up, and it hits you that you are going to actually have to do something about the situation?

That's when the mini van pulled into the parking lot.

Now what?

We walked up to the driver's side (still clinging to each other) and the lady rolled down her window, looking a tad perplexed. We told her about the snake inside and she was as wide eyed as we were, ready to blow smoke to get out of our parking lot.
That's when (here's where the angels sing) her teen aged son said "I'll go in and take care of it".
At that moment I thanked God for puberty and testosterone.
Then the ten year old piped in as well, "I'll help!".

They were out of that van in a flash with their poor Mother panicked saying "I don't like this!".

I kept reassuring her that the worst that could happen would be to be bit as there are no poisonous snakes in Wisconsin (come on now, I was desperate).

I heard the young man ask where it was and that's when my brave Val went back into the building.
I could hear lots of bumping and someone shouting for a broom. All the while, me and the Mother of these boys clinging to each other outside.
(I pretty much clung to whoever was in reach)

Then the boy screamed, "Mom! Get to the back door and hold it open!".

She was shaking like a leaf, but knew her boys were in there, I wasn't going to be of any help and she just had to do it. She was sooooo brave.

This woman grabbed the door, the boy yelled at her to get to the side of it and then
whoosh, whoosh, whoosh... out it came flying in a circular motion.

The Mother started screaming and high stepping towards me like Hitler himself had trained her.
When she grabbed me she yelled "Is it chasing me?!!!!".

This was the moment I doubled over laughing.

What energies were working in the universe that day that made this entire story come together, I will never know. The relief and hugs and telling and retelling of this story in that afternoon will never be forgotten.

I still think so fondly of Valerie and how brave she was. How she agreed that bringing my dog Chester to keep watch was a good idea, and how just days later we were ringing up a customer and saw a big rat crawl down the wall behind her while we kept our calm until she was in her car.

All these years later, with Valerie in Tucson and me in a much better location Viva is still moving along. I miss Valerie a lot, but we are in contact. It's rare that this story doesn't come up in our conversation, and I hope she enjoys reading it here.

See? I told you I was lucky.

Shop Fun

Don't you love this creature? Actually it's a decal that can be put onto a wall or glass.

We put ours on an old mirror.

Our little crow friends have arrived.

Not Halloween, but some fun I found a couple of weekends ago.
Crinolines. Love this one which I would have kept, but it's too small for me.
You know I would totally wear this.

I found this wicker laundry cart which is very cute, but not really my style.
Boy was I surprised when I put it in the shop and read the stamp on it!!!

It's an actual laundry cart from the Chicago Merchandise Mart!!!!
That's fun.

A new display case arrived in the shop and had fun filling it full of Halloween fun.

Really fun glitter decorations on our lockers up front.

Oh do...

And from my blog pal Junkin Julie, I scored these really cool numbered stamps that must have been from a store because some of the stamps say "Lb", "each" and "for", with the old cents stamp.

Our holiday show is coming up Oct. 23rd. If you've been, you know that we transform the shop into themed rooms and pull out all the stops.
This year I really wanted to do "New Year's In Paris", but have been struggling with just how to do it.
Yesterday, I came across this mother load and am truly inspired!
I can't wait to share my ideas with you.

Time To Stock Up and Nest

This is a quick peek at a fun collection I have at home. I can't resist the old clock faces, and rarely pass one up. One of our themes for the Holiday show Oct. 23rd is "New Year's In Paris".
We'll be using a clock theme, but you'll have to wait and see!

There is a woman named Sandy that comes to the shop every year in late summer. She and her daughter harvest all kinds of grasses and grains. I've bundled them together for simple fall swags.

Boy, do we have silver! As you know, I always keep it at three bucks a per piece, and we're loaded with some real beauties right now!

The Long and Winding Road

My only duty on Saturday was to pick John up at the airport, on his way home from Paris, at 8:40 that evening. Don't feel sorry for me, it was business. I'm still licking my wounds from the whole Junk Bonanza deal.

You know what? I remembered that my pal Jeanine from Chippy Shabby was going to have a booth at a flea market in Germantown. I called her up, she said it was small, but I knew that if I drove the three hours directly to her, I could spend the rest of my day junking and exploring the country side back to the Green Bay airport.
Woo-hoo!I knew that if I left at the crack of dawn, I could get there right before it opened. Jeanine always has the best finds and I would never hesitate to go to one of her many sales because I know she has just what I want.
So, I didn't leave at the crack of dawn, but I did get there in time to snag some great items.

A vintage chandelier that I'm still wondering why I left it there.

Another lovely chandie (I've noticed some people calling them chandies's... trying to stay with the IN crowd).

Here are my scores from Jeanine, not looking like much but you just wait! They will be making a very special appearance at our holiday show Oct. 23rd.

After some weird stops in odd towns, I knew that I would enjoy Plymouth, WI where the Red Rooster was located. I did score and you will have to wait for the Oct. show.
I will tell you to be sure and visit this shop as there is so much to see, and the prices are very reasonable.

I did pick up hubby and we spent the night in Green Bay so we could just have a nice dinner and relax rather than hoofing it back to DC. I had a hard time finding a room, but we got a decent one with a restaurant and bar.... where we proceeded to share it with partiers and revelers going to the Packer game the next day.
Let me just leave you with this unromantic idea... A couple got off of the elevator and we heard someone say, "no problem, brother"... we got on and and a middle aged man in Packer gear from head to toe, asked which floor we wanted to go to, and when I told him it took him quite some time to focus on which button I was speaking of.
Needless to say, I stayed in the corner of the elevator praying that we got out before he tossed his good time all over our feet.
So the next morning, I remembered that I had googled antiques is WI and remember the one above.

We spent big bucks on just the outside!

This isn't a great pic, but this sweet lady is the owner. This mall had fantastic things at really good prices.
Here's another thing with me... when I go into antique malls, it always seems that the people working are just a little more than cranky. Even when I see great items, a cool clerk can really turn me off.
This woman was a gem. Happy to help, happy we were there and just delightful all around.
We bought a-plenty!

Junk Bonanza Pout... Might As Well Re-work Displays!

So

So.... I had every chance to go to the Junk Bonanza in MN.
Dang.
Sometimes I'm just a loser.
If you follow any blogs, all you are hearing about are the great buys, fabulous displays and
Ki and Heather. Of course Deb of Curious Sofa.
Okay, someone kick me in the pants next year if by June 1st, I don't have travel plans put in place.
Not to mention the Creative Connection.... Augh, Charlie Brown!
Breathe.

I let the time get away from me, so tomorrow I'm heading out to Germantown, WI
To see Jeanine of Chippy Shabby and Junkin' Julie at a special show they are doing at the
Pilgrim Antique Mall.

In the meantime, I decided to get my own creative connection and re do some things in the shop.

Halloween and Mike, the Fedex Guy

You know you live in a small town when you answer the phone and on the other end you here

"Hey Angie, it's Mike. I've got a huge shipment for you and I'm not going to be there until 5:00, maybe later".
That would be Mike the Fedex Guy.
So, I spent my Friday evening unpacking boxes, hating that I was leaving Carol with a
mess of cardboard to put out the next morning.
However, there was Halloween in the boxes, and you all know I've laid the background for this.
So, I will admit to enjoying putting it together. There's even some orange in it... but I like it!
This guy is big. Notice that he is hanging from an old porch column.

Mr. Funny Bones. Hmmm... I like him too!

Okay, I admit to ordering these little crows from a catalog without having seen them up close for myself, but they are great.

And this little lady? Looks like she got her skirt from the Magic Jacket.

Fall Foof and Fluff.

First of all, Peter is not on his knees. My BFF, Karen gave me a couple of sunflower sprouts in little peat pots to put outside. I just handed them off to Peter, and voila!
Seriously, have you ever seen a sunflower so big?
I also love that it's in the sign bed right on the road... it's drawn quite a following.

So this post is again, this and that. We got in more of these FABULOUS vests.
Linen... washer, dryer... put it on. No fussing here.

I foofed and fluffed today... it was a great time to do so seeing as how we had 78.00 in the till at the end of the day. Gotta love the week after Labor Day weekend.
However, the linen napkins I've been waiting for arrived today.
These napkins are 15.00 each. I know, I know, but they are made of a very heavy linen
and wash and dry like a charm. They will also last a lifetime, and could be handed down if desired.
I do love the mercury pendant lamps!

As far as a great vintage find, check out this scale. I've seen a kajillion of these, but not one as pretty or nearly as large.

The "snake story" happened the second year we were in business.

It's almost Labor Day, people. Doesn't your brain go straight to Halloween?

Yeah, I know but you gotta keep up in the retail world.

I will admit to having some fun. Some of you know that this is about my least

favorite holiday (since growing up anyway, who says we adults can't dress up and get

free candy?).

Anyway, while I have some great Halloween art from Altered Ever After, the

rest of my Halloween orders have not arrived.

This week after hours, I have spent time at the antique malls gathering black gloves, umbrellas and a few other goodies to give the shop a great backdrop for the rest that will be here any day now.

I think of myself as a kind of happy and joyful... an optimistic kind of person.

I don't know where the above idea came from, but I'm calling it "clevah".

It was really easy to find vintage black gloves. Witchy. How easy would it be to stitch them together, add a little more ephemera, and make a spooky garland?

Okay, here is where I'm patting myself on the back. This antique kick sled has been hanging in the rafters since last winter. I figured it was getting close to cool weather, why take it down now?
Aha!
I went to the hardware store, bought and painted a couple of brooms black, shredded an umbrella, and there you have it.
I love it.
We have lots of black crows and owls that will be perched for the ride.

This may be the most scattered, rambling post I write. But hey, I've got a lot going on

and am ready to share.

First, I want to share the napkin "ring" idea I came up with.

Bit of lace, a key and a fabulous old photo tucked in.

Tablescape... is that even a real word?

Sounds obnoxious. I just decorate my table.

For those of you wanting new out of the way places to go in Door County, there is a great

place on Plateau Rd in Sister Bay where you can get the best honey you've ever tasted.

Also, while you're there, cut your own flowers and leave the money in a jar.
The sunflowers are fabulous, and the monarchs are all over this pastoral road.

Project for tomorrow... you just wait and see!

The blue color in this vintage pin is not correct in this picture. It's a bit softer with that 50's blue color.
If you come in and I'm wearing this, you must curtsie.

Creep Factor:

So, last spring my husband and I were coming home from St Paul, and we always

hop off the road and get into Hudson. (That's another story).

Anyway, there is a fun antique spot there and we spotted this old doll.

I grabbed it quickly thinking it could be something of shabby value.

It was at the counter when I realized the arms were gone, part of the nose was missing and

it had a hole in it's head!

Straw was coming out of the leg joints, and basically it was starting to gross me out.

I decided the little horror would have to go back on the shelf.

Then my husband pointed to something next to the counter.

Old crutches that had been for a child.

I got a case of the giggles.

The owner of this place never remembers me because I don't come that often, but when I

do I buy, buy and buy and I know she's impressed and curious about what I'm taking.

Anyhoo... why I got church giggles I don't know. I couldn't stop.

I really felt as though I were irritating her greatly when she chimed in

" There's no point in buying that poor baby crutches, she doesn't have any arms!".

Then she cracked herself up!

Love to laugh like that... makes the world all better again.

So while I've kept the poor thing in the back room, how perfectly creepy is she in the Halloween

dislpay?!

I bet I know exactly what you're thinking at this point,

"She shoulda bought those crutches..."

Paper Bracelets

Look at these lovelies! They are paper bracelets that have been embossed,

hand painted and adorned by Jenny Gooden.

She had one on when she brought me these that she had been

wearing six weeks straight. It was starting to soften and fade, looking better

than ever.

I find it much more interesting to share lots of things with you, and then Ms Gracie's Cottage reminded me that I should be showing more pictures of the shop.
(for those of you wanting more of the county... Flying Pig in Algoma is a MUST)
Anyhoo.... lots of new things in this week.
I'm so fried from the trunk show and the whirlwind trip to St Paul, I can barely keep up.
Today I just decided to stay in the moment and not rush... (at the end of the day my 18 year old baby stopped by, wanting to eat dinner with me and watch Zombie Land... how can you refuse?)

From Taylor Linens, we recieved yummy linen shams that say "Good Morning", "Good Night" or "Sweet Dreams".

Still have some great vintage restaurant ware but selling out quick... getting low means I need to make a trip!
Okay, here's a question, see how heavy those saucer bottoms are? A lot of time I get in plates or saucers that have these really beefy bottoms. Do you think they were for a cruise ship or airplane? I wonder... maybe a train?!

We finally got these great lamps in.
Love the chenille like shades with the vintage looking wood bases.

Here's the good smellin' stuff! Shelly Kyle perfumes.... very light with citrus/floral notes.
And yes, that is body powder and a powder puff.
I had a customer in the other day that reminded me of when we all took baths, and them fluffed up with our Woolworth body powders... we all did, remember?

Check this out. My friend Karen gave me these tiny seedlings... sunflowers. Peter (you know Peter) put them out in the sign bed. The sign is a good seven feet tall and these babies are beyond that! Just getting ready to bloom.

These were dropped off today... back to school theme? Should, but I just can't.

Let's fast forward to Halloween! That's better than "back to school". Altered Ever After Halloween fun.

I adore this little blue chippy chair. It's sturdy and dreaming of a good home.

Burlap rules.... at least for the moment, and we've got some fun stuff.

I've never liked mass produced art work, but this one bit me. First of all, cherries.
The saying is what got me....
"We tend to seek happiness, when actually it's a choice." hmmm..."

A great assortment of frames that are new, but have a very vintage/antique feel to them.

I love, love this! Shams and pillows on the hanging bed... very "cottagey".
Is that even a word? I know you know what I mean.

The best for last.... you don't see the entire necklace. You are missing the part that is an emptied vintage pocket watch filled with bits and pieces... and a young girl aka, Alice.

Trunk Show... Weather, Special Order!

I asked the weather gods if they would just blow the humidity out so that
people would actually want to try on clothes.
Seriously, Friday was a stunner and Saturday couldn't have been prettier!
Oddly enough, as we were shutting down the show, the humidity blasted right back.

As usual, we had a blast. Here are Diane from Monticello and Debbie from Magic Jacket sizing
up a customer and giving advice about her outfit.... I promised I wouldn't post her picture.

As always, it was a lot of work, but we always have a good time and there's nothing like dressing a woman with a basic and taking her around to other tents and being able to layer her up from other shops.

Well. After the big trunk show, (which by the way was a blissful day, and more to come) we headed straight to St Paul to see this guy,
Danny.
He is my oldest son.
We had an old, but great sofa to deliver to him. This young man graduated from Hamline University, May of 2008.
At the graduation ceremony, all of us were there, including both sets of grand parents.
So proud to watch him walk the stage and get his diploma.
I'll never forget the Hamline President's speech in which she noted that this was the worst time in history to graduate from college.
Hmm... true.

We moved to Door County when Danny was seven years old.

We thought that if it didn't work, we could always move back to Chicago, or Texas.

Danny was welcomed by a small, yet rather ambitious second grade class, and Mrs.
Woerful made certain that he sat next to Kurt L., who would take good care of him.

He did.

All these years later, Danny is living in St Paul, trying his best not to return to Door County.

I couldn't be more proud of him.
Growing up in Door County teaches you a work ethic like no other.
You have four months to make a living.
The other thing you learn is that life can take you in all kinds of creative directions.

Danny mowed golf courses, washed dishes, made pizzas and then some.

A lot of you remember all those years ago when he ran the cash register from time to time, at the shop.

Anyway, here he is making his way, and I couldn't be more proud.

Altered Ever After Heading To Viva

UG. So today I'm working on making it a better outdoor dressing room.

Can I just say that what you see above is five women business owners, all

of us competing to an extent against each other yet totally having a ball.

Whenever I'm scared, thrilled, wondering what was I thinking when I ordered

that, worrying for the 14th time if we'll get through June or had the biggest

sales day ever... well, I just call one of those girls.

No snarks here.

Our "Friends of Viva" Trunk Show is coming up August 7th, and thought I'd do a post to feature each shop over the next couple of weeks.
Today is all about Magic Jacket.
Here is Debbie... how adorable is she? Not a more generous, artistic and fun person have I been around. Oh, and did I mention she has one of the most drool worthy shops in all of Door County?
Before I go on, I want to mention that her shop was busy, and I didn't get all the clothing shots I would have hoped for, but you get the idea!

Outfit by Krista Larsen... I am crazy about these tops. I have a couple myself and simply wear them with jeans.

Magic Jacket is a fairly small store in size, but you must look in every nook and cranny.
These one of a kind pins were on the wall behind the counter.

Debbie has the most unique selection of shoes I've seen.
These are fabulous, as well as comfortable.

There is a wonderful selection for brides as well as Mom's of the bride as well.

A very nice selection of the above... head to toe if need be!

Shoes and accessories by Mona... all kinds of shoes and handbags painted in vibrant colors and styles. Mona will be a special feature at the trunk show.

Trunk Show Break at the Wild Tomato

With the trunk show coming up and actually realizing that customers are reading this blog, I have decided to do a feature on each shop during the next two weeks, so you can get to know the owners a bit (all charming in their own rights, and such unique personalities).
I just spent the best hour at Magic Jacket. Taking photos is a great way to really get into the store. I'm a great shopper, but I'm not one to spend hours picking a store apart.
It's also a wonderful way to watch another shop owner interact with customers.
After I finished the "shoot" (doesn't that sound professional...) I realized I was famished and needing food.
I was in Fish Creek, tourists abound on a July weekend, where could I get something really good, but not have to be in the thick of things.
Wild Tomato.
I would just get a veggie wrap to go.
If someone else had been with me, I would have gotten a pizza, which frankly may be the best in the state of Wisconsin. I'm not kidding.

I have to admit I was really put out when Diggers was gone, but have eaten my words many a time.

You can sit outside under umbrellas, or dine inside. The wine and beer list is lovely, and thoughtful.
When it gets to be July in Door County, employers and employees alike can get a little "tense".
Not the case at Wild Tomato.
There is quite a large staff, which in such a small space impresses me, and I always notice that they all seem very relaxed and friendly.
Things go very smoothly inside.

This day was so crowded, and it was hard for me to get too many great pictures, but after the two adorable hostesses greeted me, they let me get some action shots while I was waiting on my veggie wrap.

Love this guy... he knew how to work it for the camera, even in front of the hot wood fired stone oven with orders piled up.

So, in about five minutes my veggie wrap came out of the stone oven. Roasted peppers, mushrooms, gorgeous avocados, spinach and a side of beans and rice.
Love all you visitors to the county, honestly I do. What would we do without you?
However, sometimes I just don't want to be in the hustle bustle of it all.
So I took the above, and had my lunch.....

A Day Off In Door County

My First Flea Market And A Slight Hangover

It's hard to believe, but it's been almost 20 years since I first discovered Kane County Flea Market. We were living in Wilmette IL and the boys were one and six. John traveled a lot... a lot. If you have, or remember having little ones at your feet (and a husband out of town), you know the idea of a flea market that is about an hour away, with two girlfriends, is just what the doctor ordered.

The previous summer, I had taken a quick alone trip to Dallas to go to visit my parents. Mom and I always took a day to hit the road and explore little Texas towns, and ended up in Fredricksberg.
What a charming spot! We had never seen anything like this.
Mom and I ventured into a store called "Homestead".
I thought we were going to actually fall over at all the creative ideas that were going on in this home decor store.
I had never imagined mixing old and new items... and bedding where nothing matched exactly, but was somehow just right.
Beds made out of hickory so fresh, some had sprouted leaves.
Huge vintage jars filled with white, children's tea sets, white buttons and string. Tattered violins, iron beds and white antique linens hanging from the rafters. Huge farm tables set with antique china where not one pattern matched, but the colors did.
(Imagine the Angels singing)
Anyhoo, I was bit... and bit big.... (back into my native slang).
So my friend, Susie suggested we go to this "flea market" and see what it's all about.
At this point, I hadn't really thought about vintage or antiques... or really even collecting them.
I was however, enamored with transferware. I didn't know there was a name for it, but always like seeing those patterns in old movies or television shows.
I decided that I would look for a wash basin set, you know, the bowl and pitcher thing.
To set the tone, you must know that John was out of town, but coming home the next day and a sitter was all set.... and that the night before when the boys were settled in their beds, my childhood friend Dyanne called and was having some relationship troubles.... and that she had a glass of wine. A thousand miles away, I cracked open a bottle for myself.
When 5:00 am rang in loudly, I was not at my best.

Nausea... and then some.

During the drive there, I knew I needed food.
It was May, but drizzling and really, really cold.
We parked and paid our way in, and I confessed to my girls that I had to find some food or we would be going right back home.
Cold and hungover... (angels again) we wandered into the main building where the local 4H club was selling home made soup. White bean with chicken, and oyster crackers to boot.
I was a new woman!

We found ourselves surrounded by several booths that sold antique quilts. We had quilts as kids that our relatives had passed down, but I had never seen artwork like I was seeing.
You know how you have moments in your life where you see something and are forever changed?
Susie picked up a quilt, spread it out. She ran her hands over it and remarked at the quality of and craftsmanship behind every stitch.
That was it for me.

So now I want to show you what I found that day.

The pitcher, basin, shaving cup and saucer as well as the chamber pot.
Susie did mention that it would be great to serve soup out of...

This was my most delightful find. Just for me.
I paid 185.00 for it all those years ago and still love it.
The entire day was so special... did you know that when it's cold, raining and muddy that at every flea market they sell socks and gloves?
At the end of the day we had a huge meal at "Country Kitchen" that filled us up for the ride home. (We were hungry.)

So many of our customers come in, shop and leave. Some do wander the grounds, which is also important to us! We've actually had people picnic on our grounds, and we welcome that as well.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share pictures of the outside of the shop to entice you. This is out the back door and where our Vintage Market and Trunk shows are held.
Lavendar is ready to bloom... right at the corner of the front door.

When I walk over to the bakery next door to grab a treat, this is the bridge that leads back to the shop. You can see our red doors ahead.

Creative Kids at Viva's Vintage Market

We're excited to introduce a children's craft area this year at

Viva's Vintage Market!

Christine Andrew, former owner of Ginny and Freda's will be helping

kids of all ages decorate berets. So while Mom and Dad shop the market, your little ones can occupy their time

creating and crafting a fabulous beret.

There will be a nominal charge of 12.00 to cover supplies.

Beret decorating is on a first come first serve basis and supplies are

limited.

How Quickly It Goes... A Door County Wedding

This post has nothing to do with the shop. This post is purely sentimental and I wanted to just share something so sweet with you.

My oldest son, Danny's childhood friend got married on Saturday.

If you've ever been to Door County, you know that Seaquist name and it's association with all things cherry, apple, farm and market. Seaquist roots run very deep here.

Cole and Danny lead very different lives these days, but memories abound. Especially with us Mom's who sat on bleachers, carpooled, hosted sleepovers, celebrated our boys victories and comforted each other when we realized our babies were less than perfect.

While making our way to our seats, I spotted Delmar Dahl pulling the young men together in a prayer circle.

We were seated way out in a field surrounded by a cherry orchard. We looked back at the house to watch the ladies come in.
The flower girl made sure that those rose petals did not escape.

They grew up just miles from each other and had to go to MN to finally meet!

Danny is living in St Paul, so when I see these boys together my heart just smiles.

Lisa and Cole.
I've only met Lisa two or three times, but in those short moments, I could tell there was something very dear about her and very genuine. She is one special girl.

We could not make the reception which was held on the island.
I was sorry, especially after getting caught up in the wedding sentiments, I was ready to toast.
I know Terry got her Bitters card.... and I'm sure a great time was had by all.

There are some really great new items at Viva that arrived this week.

You might be aware of Trillium's organic body line that is made right here in Door County,

but you don't know about the organic Baby and Mom line they have introduced,

because I'm the first to carry it!

All kinds of rubs, oils, balms and bath products. A really great one is the "Breathe Free Tea Tree Respiratory Rub" Perfect for a little stuffy one.

(I've had this green rack/thing for a year knowing it would serve a purpose at some point...HELLO.)

The Garden From the Dump

Many of you know this place. It's a wonderful campground that is around the corner from the shop. Like much of Door County, it's full of all kinds of people and all levels of camping types.

From tents to RV's that cost more than my house.

Kayakers invade the place each summer and I love driving by seeing their temporary tents and kayaks piled high.

This is my BFF Karen, who with her husband Mike run the place. They took over from Mike's parents (who are everywhere on their golf carts) and have their nephew Josh and his sweet wife Carol and two precious little girls, working hard, next
in line for the thrown.

If you're reading my blog, you know my shop. You probably know I'm not the camping sort and Karen and I are very different in our asthetics, so to speak.
Our friendship stems from walking.
I'm thinking we've been walking for maybe ten summers now.
Let's just say we've laughed (howled), cried, been furious, scared, joyful, thankful and would defend each other until the end.
So when Karen asked me to help her with a garden problem, I agreed without hesitation.... hmmm.

You want to do what?

She reminded me that the cedar trees roots were spoiling the annuals space and that I had mentioned maybe planting annuals in galvanized tubs and buckets.

She and Mike invaded (illegally I might add) an old dump that farmers would throw their things into before we had garbage pick up.

Could I help her place these buckets and tubs around?

Here is the blank slate.

And here we go! After I was certain my tetnus shot was fairly recent, we dug in.

Let's just say, not everyone was on board, but after moving and digging and planting, things were looking pretty darn great!

(There have been reports of big time crow eating at Aqualand)

We have no clue what this is, but when the impatients fill out, look out!

The smaller buckets at the top of the picture had hooks on them so we attached them to the bigger tub for a fun layered look.

Here is a shot from the front. All that's left is to watch it all grow and fill out.

Karen and I were so proud of our work we hit the dump that same afternoon...

Wait till you see the old chicken feeder I planted up at home!

In the end, another great day with my girl... and I wouldn't advise any of you to just wander into any dump that you see.

Humble Beginnings (I'm Outta Here)

Do any of you remember this little gem of a cabin? It was where we first opened

Viva la Cabin on Townline road.

It was originally a german schoolhouse, but went on to serve as art galleries,

artist's studios and finally into a summer home.

Remember Valerie? She was my first employee and I could really crack the whip.

Boy, do we have a couple of stories that would knock your socks off... actually, I'm going to write

about the four foot long pine snake soon, because it is a gem of a story and has bonded Valerie and I for life.

When we had the little cabin we painted all the trim in a great red color and put in gardens on the back side with a little stone patio. It was just lovely.... but no one came to see us.

Location, location, location! Fourteen years later we are in a prime spot surrounded by other worthy retailers, but

boy do I miss that cabin. All I have to do is open a box of Gianna Rose soaps and I'm transported right back in time.
I do want to show you these darling magnets that came in. We have several different styles.

These soaps as well. They pack a 16.00 price tag, but the wrapping, smell and the glass charm

do make a great gift.

We are open every day now, and next week the Heart's Desire clothing will be here!

We've all been waiting and it may turn into a party/shoving match to see who gets what first!

The show is getting closer and we are not getting enough sleep.,... only because we're so excited!
Each day we're bringing you complementery treats!
Friday, enjoy our famous cream cheese and coconut cupcakes, and
whas them down with Arnold Palmers.

On Saturday we will have Mango Iced tea and sour cream coffee cakes.

Sunday will bring Rhubarb and Strawberry Lemonade!

I will post some of the wonderful containers we've planted up for you.... it's a hoot.

Vintage Nest Of Door County Show at Viva!

All kidding aside, the Vintage Nest of Door County Show is coming up May 7th, 8th and 9th

and we've been busy bees collecting and creating to put another, yet very different sale and show for you.

"Into the Garden" is the name of our show and the shop will be absolutley filled with vintage garden finds, and a special nod to Mother's Day.

Something different for us this year are the vintage items we will have planted up with blooms to last all summer long.

Want to treat your Mom or yourself? Come up for the day, and we'll tell you some of our favorite places to have a splendid breakfast or lunch.

April Showers Bring New Arrivals

73 degrees yesterday and 48 today. Ahhh, springtime in Door County.

At least we have new items arriving to distract us from the weather.

Many of you know Kris Bengener who used to own Rugged Basics in Ephraim, she is now using her artistic skills, bringing us lovely necklaces. All kinds of metals and vintage items put onto lovely chains.

I found this vintage quilt. It's actually square, so I think it was actually made to be a table topper.

Score. For whatever reason this winter, I have been coming across white ironstone at great prices. Plates and wide rimmed soup bowls are only going for 5.00. I like to share when I've gotten a good deal.

This mug is not a repro. Neat!

I found this great old chair that only has the burlap left on it. Surrounded with Pine Cone Hill matelasses. Check out the ruffles on the table cloth.

I wish I hadn't forgotten to rotate this card. We got some wonderful new cards in from Tokyo Milk.... this one says

Junkin' around... hit and miss!

This past Sunday, John and I decided to hit the road and go to the Shawano Flea Market.

Hmmm.... not what I had hoped for although I did find a few items.

So we decided to take the back roads.

We passed this shop out in the middle of nowhere and I told John to just keep on going. It looked a little sketchy to me.

John assured me that he would defend my honor and protect me if there were any boogie monsters inside.

This beauty is up for sale. I LOVE old trucks like this. My granddad had a similar one and I remember standing up in the seat next to him sucking on a lollipop and one arm swung over his shoulder. We would surely get in big trouble today!

And here are the big scary monsters that hosted us.

Charming and chatty as could be. He gave me a nice deal on my purchases and had a real sense of retailers sticking together and helping each other out during these times.

New Candles Just In Time For Mother's Day

Fresh into the shop are some gorgeous candles. Lovely packaging and the scents are incredible!

If you're looking for a sweet thing to give your Mother, or someone who has been a Mother to you, these are perfect.

A Sunday Tour of Door County

You can tell that there is not much going on at the shop other than spring cleaning and waiting for our new merchandise to come in... so John and I went for a Sunday drive.

I've always wanted to do a photo shoot of "Rusty Door County"... even though some find it somewhat unattractive, I love it.

Needless to say, we got sidetracked. I only have two rusty photos in this post.... to come in a bit. John and I know of a public picnic area that is on the beach that very few know of. It is only about 20 feet wide and you literally park next to someone's home. There's a green space then about six feet down a ledge, you are on a fantastic beach!

Hold the phone.... Is that a bald eagle?

Yes! We saw it coming in and he literally is about 30 feet over our heads! He floated right above us for what seemed like a little too long and it freaked me out! It was fantastic. Click on the picture for a better look!

Back to the secret beach. I will tell you it's between Ellison Bay and Gill's Rock. Call me if you want to know where it is... I wouldn't want the masses showing up when John and I are trying to have a romantic picnic!

The beach is all sand and shells. Around the corner is stone and cliffs.

Rusty. John's got nerve. We drove onto this property... looked like no one was home. Those of us who live here all have stories about tourists coming onto their property, and here we were.

Some day I'll tell you the story about when we first moved here and late one night a very drunken "Tony" let himself into our house... I digress.

I call these "son's a bitches".... pardon me. You would too if you have been driving four young boys to Green Bay and one landed in your wind shield leaving powdered glass on all passengers and a sagging hole in half of it! We still talk about this... and we do laugh... especially that he bounced off the car landed in the ditch on the other side of the road, and hopped up going on his merry way!

Rusty! I have passed this cottage a million times and this day was the first time I had ever noticed it! It is tiny and I dare say I love the sagging awning. It's smack in the middle of a DC village... any guesses?

I love this picture.... this is the shoreline and about 50 feet out was that ice. Love the colors, again, taken from high above.

The swans are at North Bay. They were to far out to get any really good pictures, but it was haunting none the less. Have you ever heard the swans sing? It's amazing.

Far, far away... past the white barns with the green roofs is my little farmhouse. White with a red roof. I love to look for it at this spot... and love the changes this field makes throughout the season.

An Excursion With Much Muchness.

This is my friend Debbie, whom some of you may know from the Magic Jacket in Fish Creek.

She turned 60 last week (we should all look this good) and it was time to celebrate with an excursion to Green Bay.

Green Bay... surprised? Don't be. If you haven't been to the suburb, DePere, you don't know what you're missing!

We started the day with a crown and magic wand (in which Debbie used to take out the sugar in the two yummy cakes we ate) and swept her to DePere with our mission being to peruse Assemblage Studio, have lunch at Bouchee and off to see "Alice".

Let the shopping begin... Theresa, the owner is an artist that uses found objects to make all kinds of incredible things. She has weekly classes and you can find an enormous amount of treasures in her tiny shop.

Glitter and ribbon and paper... oh my!

We all wanted this collage masterpiece. Especially with the theme of the day.... we were stunned to find out it was made by twelve year old Tyler, who was in school at the moment and couldn't be reached for a price quote.

We gave Debbie a gift certificate and she put it to good use.

The displays at Assemblage are over the top. You just want everything, pile it up on the counter, having no idea what you're going to do with it but you know you HAVE to have it!

Debbie and Kim snuck into Theresa's studio. That's where the best stuff was.

On to Bouchee! Kim got things kicked off by reciting "The Jabberwocky"... seriously.

Okay, this was everyone's first time eating at Bouchee. The menu is as good and as fresh as it gets. Have you ever eaten a meal where you can just FEEL the love put into it? This is where it's at.

A sampling above. We had ordered a small cake in advance and they brought it out to Debbie and even cut it and served it. The staff was very chipper and you just knew that who ever owns Bouchee, knows good food and how to train and treat a staff very well.

New Linens at Viva

We finally received our shipment from Pom Pom. I was smitten with the woman who came up with this European linen line when she was featured in Mary Englbreits magazine several years ago. They did a holiday feature on her home, and it was the first time I had seen pink and champagne colors used for Christmas.... not to mention the smaller Christmas trees put around her home in antique garden urns.

Anyway, above is a gorgeous set of "His and Hers" linen cases in dove gray and white.

Lovely, lovely linen place mats and napkins. Several different colors and frankly, a fantastic wedding gift. Washer AND dryer safe!

New euro shams.... nice neutrals for spring.

Here is our favorite Pine Cone Hill Caroline Sheets. These come in blue and pink as well.

All I am going to say about the pink, is I repainted it back to the old color and a customer came to pick up a special order and one corner was still pink.... she said "ooh, it looks very french". OMG.

I'm still putting the shop back together after the big show and today finally got the finishing touches done. Above... I have a great supply of white ironstone and vintage restaurant ware.

LOVE this tiny button card that had Paris written across the top... Gianna Rose heart soaps.

Well, it's time to bid a fond farewell to this vanity. I've had it in the shop for years and finally am done with it. It is up for sale. It is in great condition and smells very fresh from storing all the soaps in the drawers over the years!

A lot of you have wanted this over the years... and I'm sad to see it go, but sometimes you just have to move on.

You'll have to fill out proper forms to be considered.

One more thing, if you click on the picture to get a better view of the vanity, I NEED you to know that I took the picture right after the show and the view in the mirror is, well.... I'm sorry!

Sugar Cane My.... An Angry Little Post

"Yes you can! I'll take one gallon, eggshell of Sugar Cane." I am so excited for the changes I'm making in the shop. "What?! Yes, it said Benjamin Moore, Sugar Cane."

I had just read an ENTIRE blog post devoted to the beauty of the Sugar Cane color, she HAD to find it.... hell, she should KNOW about Sugar Cane, she is an expert after all.

"I'm just sure..." I'm starting to deflate, she can't find it in the computer. "Oh here it is," she says "they put a space between the words".

Please. (And a little eye roll).

As she puts all the special little drops into the base coat I am thinking of how this special color is going to lighten yet warm a couple of walls. The shaker revs up and I am comforted by the sound of its vibrations, knowing that by the end of today.... magic.

"Light pink is what you wanted right?"

"Sugar Cane," I corrected her.

Merry, merry little day I'm having.

As I'm pouring the liquid gold into the paint tray, I'm surprised it's not a little........ different. Oh well, who cares, I have Sugar Cane!

You know, not only will this room look nice with the new color, so will THAT one. I think I'll try a little section so see what it looks like with the painted squares on the floor. Hmm, pretty but a little light. It just needs a second coat, so while I wait for that to dry, I take all of the card displays off the wall. Happy, happy. Taking out nails, filling holes.

One coat on half the wall. What's off here? Oh, the greenish tinge in the white ceiling paint is making the Sugar Cane look a little off. I'll have to paint the ceiling. No biggie, it'll pay off in the end.

In my perfect little day of painting and creating magic, I'm noticing that my neck is starting to hurt from pushing and pulling the roller brush across the ceiling. Small price to pay for SUGAR CANE.

Obviously it will all need a second coat, but after that, dreamy, wonderful Sugar Cane.

Oh, put a second coat on the wall in that other room.

Okay! Time for the second coat in the card room... but first I must go out the front door and come back in so that I can thrill in the glory that IS Sugar Cane.

Hmm. Well, it's just in need of that second coat.

Second coat on and drying.... my neck is starting to get a little angry, so I don't quite finish the last section of the ceiling. Who cares, I've got tomorrow.

Out the front door again... to thrill once more at the surprise.

Hmm.... it just needs to dry.... everybody knows that it looks DIFFERENT when it's dry...

Folks, with the card room and half of the room towards the back painted, I have a slightly lighter version of Pepto Bismol with a little cool lavender thrown in... only slightly lighter.

In my earlier post, I spoke of my excitement of this "old world look" of pink, as well as mentioning that I am no fan of pink.

Why didn't someone TELL me? You... you... and you as well! Is there even such a thing as "old world" pink? You KNEW I was making that up.

I will go back to Champeau Paint Store tomorrow with my tail between my legs and my aching neck and beg her to help me with the MESS that IS Sugar Cane.

This gal is an interior decorator in the Houston area.

She has shared a home for sale she found on the Sotheby's web site.

Her insights are very entertaining and when she calls the home pretentious, she isn't kidding.

The game is to guess who the decorator is. I had no clue, maybe you will.

The home is going for a cool 15,000,000.00.

While I am really turned off by this kind of in your face wealth, I couldn't help but dream of spending some time there. Go and take a look, you'll admit it as well.

Passing And Sharing, A Gift To You

I wanted to share this beautiful picture with you. It's rare that you see an old photo like this where everyone is smiling. Usually, the faces are very stoic as they were probably waiting for that huge flash explosion or just nervous about how to look in a picture.

This must have been one happy day.

Behind the scenes at the Vintage Nest of Door County was a treat. Trust me when I tell you we knew down to the most minute detail what everyone had in their booth. I watched this photo for weeks knowing it was just a prop. When we were packing up, I just had to ask Katie if I could possibly buy it from her. She kind of eyeballed me for a minute and then said "why don't you take it for now. We'll share it and then when I have a project for it you can pass it back to me". She also has a large group photo of this day that she is going to share with me. I will share it with you as well.

So today the sun is out again and it is the time of year where I tend to have new ideas for the shop. I'm going to spend the next ten days painting and moving big pieces. I have new ideas for every room in the shop.

I was inspired by a blog I read on the color pink. I'm not a big pink fan but this person shared the color Sugar Cane by Benjamin Moore. It's the kind of pink that has a warm, old world feel. I will take pictures along the way and post them... so if it's horrid I can at least basque in your sympathy!

Just to add one more little note to this rambling post... What an odd time in my life. Both of the boys are out of the house. Remember those little peanuts that used to run the register? When we were in the building next door and shared space with the bakery Danny got a job bussing and Ben, who was 12 at the time, worked the counter. Ben got lots of tips because he knew how to work those dimples... he still does but in a different way!

We were always close and I'm feeling some emptiness and the county feels a little different without all the school functions and music lessons.

So to round out this rambling post, one door closes and others open. For instance, my new friends who share lovely things with me like the photo above, and for the same friends who have sweet little children to remind me that this time in my life may be an odd transition, but little 18 month old Owen sets me straight that it's a great one.

Winter Break All The Way To Sturgeon Bay

I am really feeling relieved to have the Vintage Nest of Door County Show behind me. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this crazy thing we just did. I have just about finished breaking down the show and have lots of fun things to add to the shop. Actually, I am quite inspired to rearrange and re do the whole shop.

Sunday, John and I just had to get out of the house and not think about how we should be breaking down the show and decided to take a detour.

Before that, let me share a couple of Nest pictures.

So. Fire and Ice Festival. Ice sculptors, snow sculptors from all over the US, people from all over the Mid West.

We had a great time and may have gotten a couple of People's Choice votes.

The snow sculptures were down by the Maritime Museum.

We NEVER go to these things. You know, when you live here the draw is not the same as it is for a visitor. So with cabin fever and all, we ended up having a great time!

We started out having some great spicy black bean chili at The Inn at Cedar Crossing. (my frank opinion is this place is not near as good as it used to be, but luckily the chili has not changed).

Vintage Nest Show Held Over This Weedend

Last weekend was the official show for the Vintage Nest of Door County.

Feeling rather good about ourselves and our customers when we got a big case of the dreads thinking about the storm that was coming through on Tuesday and the thought of loading and having to get out of there so quickly.

Then someone said "Hey! It's the Fire and Ice Festival in Sturgeon Bay this coming weekend, wouldn't it be great if we added some new things to our booths and opened one more time?".

Yes. Quick phone call to Marge (our temporary landlord) and we were in.

Frankly, we would have paid not to have to pack it up!!

So if you missed our show last weekend, you have another chance and if you were there last weekend, know we have added some new items.

Finally! A Great Magazine When Most Have Folded

Guess what's hit the bookshelves? That's right, the long awaited Flea Market Style Magazine!

I spent a good hour going through all the pages and will go back time and time again, I just know it. There's very little advertising and practically every page if FILLED with fantastic ideas.

While we will have this for sale at the shop, you can also get it at the larger bookstores.

A Lovely Escape To You From Me.

Today I am home alone, which sometimes is the greatest gift I can give myself.

The snow is coming down and I really can't go anywhere. Other than refilling the bird feeders and walking the dogs, I've nothing to do and I'm relishing every moment of it.

So I lit a fire and checked my blog. I love to do this when I have lots of time because you tend to float around the world all from your armchair.

So today, I checked comments and found one from the "Brocantess". (click here).

Held Over By Popular Demand! (uh-oh)

The Vintage Nest of Door County will be showing again this coming weekend. We were discussing the snow storm coming in on Tuesday, the process of packing up before that hits, when we remembered that quite a few customers were hoping we would be here longer.

With the big festival coming up this weekend in Sturgeon Bay, people were telling us to stay. So after a quick call to Marge to see if she would let us stay in the building, all was set.

Of course this means I will be spending this week on the road in search on new items to bring in! (such a hard life I lead...).

How cute is this purse with the bird's nest hanging on the mail box!

I adore this. Small Town Vintage took a silver tray that had openings around the edges, tied ribbons to it and hung it. How fun this would be in so many areas of my house!

Okay, so Sunday quieted down and we got a little loopy. The hats came out. This hat was in my room and when Julie put it on, she donned it the "face-lift" hat.

Here's Joan, one of our favorite customers, trying on a vintage velvet hat with a big rose in the center.

I caught Mary Beth trying on one of Carol's painted gardening hats.

Even our customers bring in lively topics of discussion!

Here is Katie of Small Town Vintage tweaking one of her displays. The four of us are all so different which made for such fun this weekend. We all know each other, but we didn't "know" each other. Katie has the best display ideas I've ever seen. She has more talent in her pinky finger than most people. Someone wondered how she slept at night with all of these ideas she keeps coming up with. Don't even get me started on her children! Claire is seven and I think she is "Eloise" in disguise.... she was adored by many Friday night in her fabulous dress and matching hand bag. (She has a flair for the dramatic). And 18 month old Owen.... well let's just say he won't have any trouble getting the ladies or anything else he wants as he gets older.

Above left is my best gal, Carol. This woman knows how to treasure hunt and isn't afraid of any dumpster! She goes where no man would go and comes up with stuff that we just drool over! I've always thought that Carol has a real zest for life. Nothing keeps her down and she is always up for adventure!

There is Julie in the middle. Friday night was a preview party and let's just say the party was in the back... or wherever Julie was! Her laugh is infectious and she knows how to make a sale. Julie never stops rearranging and making things look new. She brought along her friend Heidi and by the time the weekend was over we were five pounds heavier with the fantastic sweets that she had made. (smile).

A good time was had by all, and the best was seeing all of you there.

The Big Weekend Has Arrived!

We have been at work for about 10 days now. I think there were only two days that I didn't make the 45 minute drive each way. Truthfully, working like this and with such good company made the drive home each evening down right dreamy.

Above I took the old chair back that only had a little burlap left on it and stuffed it to make a memo board. That was fun.

Sometimes you can take the simplest of things and just make them into little works of art. Wait till you see all of Small Town Vintage's hand made items. Eye candy.

It's funny how everyone is unloading all of the boxes and it just looks like stuff that should go to the dump, but when loved a little and given purpose to, it just shines and makes me want to take it all home.

In a Haystack and All My Best, Julie have so many treasures as well.

I'm looking forward to this first time event and hope to see many of you there.

This was a total labor of love.

Excitement is Building and I'm Tired!

Well, it's Friday and usually I'm gearing up for work on the weekend, unlike most people. Today however, I feel like TGIF. I have been in Sturgeon Bay for four long days in a row and am taking a break from the set up of Vintage Nest of Door County (which is Feb 6th and 7th, btw). Here is a snippet of the progress that has been happening!

All My Best, Julie... I love the color of these cool items. Julie has aprons and paper dolls hanging in the windows of the old kitchen.

In a Haystack.... she has four of these really unusual heavy metal chairs.

Small Town Vintage goodies.... wait till you see her displays. I'm feeling a tad jealous.... she's lucky she's such a cutie.

So............... all the girls will be there tomorrow............ I think we'll hop in the car and see what they're up to, forget TGIF.

Let The Games Begin!

Today was our first day to get into the building to get things started. What fun! We all unloaded and helped each other move, scoot and dust. Big pieces are in and now we get to start on the details, which is our favorite part!
Here is my new friend, Owen.... he's very helpful, not to mention the way he has with the ladies.

Everything was in such a mess, I had to put something in order! Vintage dress.
I came across these wonderful vintage glasses with roosters etched into them.

Vintage Nest Teasers!

No, this is not a child's dress, it's a clothespin holder!
Little rusty stool, and someone put a new/old top n this sewing base to make a fantastic side table! Vintage busts have been dolled up.

This rather large shabby style candelabra had a tag on it calling it "fu-fu"... I agree! Love it.

The Vintage Nest of Door County Show (and Viva!)

Here is a preview of a few items I've been working with. The photo above just warms my heart. Look at all the ladies toasting with their glasses full! I made a sweet collage on a vintage wine bottle.
How fun to find some vintage ballerina slippers.... what do you do with them? Ah ha! Vintage millinery flowers.... so sweet.
I wanted to make a Spring Queen crown. There is another one on the way as well.

I sure hope the weather holds up so you can all come to the show. The four of us are just having the best time! It's winter, and quiet in Door County.... what better way than to create things from the heart. We don't always get this chance during the summer.
